Description

Recently published figures have revealed that last year in Britain crime overall was down on the previous year. But violent crime, which makes up only a fraction of overall crime statistics, has gone up, and it is violent crime which people most fear.

If you were a juror in a murder case and were shown photographs of the horrific injuries sustained by the victim wouldn’t you want to convict? Especially if the defendant came up with the lame excuse that he had no recollection of what he had done because he had been blind drunk? But if you knew that the defendant’s confession had been made after seven hours in custody, without a solicitor, and was the only evidence against him, might you not begin to see the matter in a different light? Particularly if his life was at stake? Before the jurors on the George Riley case retired, the judge told them to take the photographs of the victim’s mutilated face with them – but did they have any bearing on the guilt or otherwise of the man? Or was the judge simply trying to get the juror’s blood up? You tell us if there was a miscarriage of justice in this case.
