Description

Forty years ago this month double-murderer Gary Gilmore was executed by firing squad in the US state of Utah. His controversial execution, the first since the US Supreme Court had reinstated the death penalty following a 10-year moratorium, proved a catalyst for further executions. Since then more than 1,400 convicted killers have been taken for a final walk from Death Row cells in US prisons. Marking the 40th anniversary of Gilmore’s demise, we take an in-depth look at his crimes as the starting point for a new series, US Executions – The Forgotten Decade. The series features death penalty cases from the 1960s, beginning with the story of Luis Monge, the last man put to death before the suspension of capital punishment. Don’t miss it.
