Description

On November 7th, 1783, John Austin became the last person executed at Tyburn, where London’s Marble Arch now stands. Following the vast expansion of London it was decided that future executions for “London and Middlesex” would be held in a more central location – Newgate Prison got the nod. Turn to page 37 for the definitive list of hangings at Newgate from 1800 until its closure in 1902 during which time 630 people – including 30 women – were hanged.

“I should know him out of a hundred,” a colleague of young Esther Prager told London detectives. But sadly she never got the chance to identify anyone, as is often the case when a prostitute is murdered by a client who arrives and departs unseen.
