Description

William Murfitt was a man to be envied. He was a wealthy, enterprising farmer with 1,000 acres near Bury St. Edmunds, Suffolk, sending his produce to Covent Garden in his own trucks and employing more than 100 men at harvest time. But nobody envied Murfitt one May day in 1938 when he died suddenly. However, his death proved to be just the beginning. It would take another 66 years until the case was finally cracked by an author and retired journalist who had a personal interest in the case.

This month also marks the 50th anniversary of the last use of the death penalty in Scotland. We recall the case and a witness statement from the time adds a new insight into events at Craiginches Prison, Aberdeen, on that fateful day in 1963
