Description

On May 29th, 1868, over a thousand years of tradition in Britain and Ireland ended when capital punishment in public was ended. But hangings continued; they simply moved behind closed doors, no longer a source of public entertainment or amusement. From Thomas Wells on August 13th, 1868, to the simultaneous last executions on the same date – August 13th – in 1964, some 1,563 people were legally put to death at 115 different locations in these islands. Of the total, 129 were shot by firing squad, the overwhelming majority of these being in Ireland. Just 41 of the total executed were women. For each, where relevant, we list the condemned, date and place of execution, victim or victims and the hangman. With many illustrations, it really is a complete guide to every execution in Britain and Ireland between 1868 and 1964. See the middle of this issue for Death Behind Closed Doors, MD’s FREE 12-page pull-out.

He was a smuggler, drug dealer, arms runner, black marketeer, cheque forger and murderer. John Donald Merrett was one of those rare men who it is difficult to believe actually existed outside the pages of an adventure novel. One Life Of Crime and you’ll see what we mean.
