Description
When a case is old enough to have passed from living memory it is often difficult to read between the lines, so to a certain extent we must take what we read at face value. However, in the story from Merthyr Tydfil, The Saga Of Dick Tamar – The Devil’s Son, many readers will ask themselves whether or not there was a miscarriage of justice. Was he hanged for his thuggish reputation? If so, then the real murderer went free. If Dick was the devil’s son, then that made his mother the devil, so it is quite conceivable that she had enemies who would have wanted to kill her.
From Estonia To San Quentin’s Death Row is the rather tragic story of two soviet defectors whose dreams of freedom took them to the USA. The young men overestimated the degree of freedom they would be allowed, for they made little effort to earn their livings. Instead, they prevailed upon the generosity of a fellow country woman who had established herself in the States – and when they had worn out their welcome, murdered her.
Another abuse of hospitality occurs in the story Carl Turner’s Deadly Double Life. The villain was a homosexual so terrified of "coming out" that when he found a lover who wanted a lasting relationship, he turned to murder as the only certain method of keeping his "secret." What he could not face up to was the fact that most of his real friends – women as well as men – were perfectly well aware of his true orientation anyway…
