Several passengers saw a man board an Eltham to Kidbrooke train in south-east London on Thursday, March 13th, 1929. Several of them, too, suddenly heard a piercing scream coming from one of the compartments.

At Kidbrooke station a man was seen running away from the train and within seconds he vanished. Later that day, when Mrs. Winifred East, 28, failed to return home from visiting friends, the police were called and her body was found on the railway line.

She had been beaten and stabbed all over her body and her head was cut off after death. The man seen running from the train was never traced. UK Murder Stories from True Crime Library.
