Enraged by his eviction from some land in County Cork, Timothy Cadogen walked into the office of William Bird, the land agent, on FEBRUARY 24th, 1900, and shot him to death. There was an eye-witness because at the time of the shooting Bird was dealing with a client.

Tried and convicted of murder at Cork Assizes, Cadogen attempted to cheat the hangman by cutting his own throat. He used the metal tip of his boot, but his suicide bid was unsuccessful and he was duly executed by James Billington.
