Eleven years ago the mother of a Peterborough child was tried for his murder, acquitted, then found guilty of child cruelty and sentenced to seven years in jail. The murder of the then six-year-old, who was strangled on Tuesday, November 29th, 1994, is now being reviewed by Cambridgeshire Police.

The case led to a major investigation into child care procedures in Cambridgeshire. The child was on the “at risk” register – there was a history of abuse by his mother who, because of her drug addiction at the time, had pleaded for her son to be taken into care. A report later blamed senior management in the county’s social services department.
