For the best part of a month in the spring of 1938 Liverpool’s shipping authorities had tried to keep apart two seamen who were known to hate each other. Aminul Hag had smashed an iron bar into the face of Jan Mohamed, since when Mohamed had been vowing vengeance.

He got it on April 11th, when he crept aboard the S.S. Kabinga in Gladstone Dock, and laid in wait
for three hours
for Hag, who
worked in the
 ship’s engine-
room. When
Hag came along
 a passage
 Mohamed beat
 him to death
with a heavy
file.

For that premeditated murder, Mohamed was sentenced to hang at Liverpool on JUNE 8th, 1938.
