Furious that his wife Catherine, 36, had gone to live with Fitz Rattan, 40, in St. George’s Road, Preston, Frank Smart, a West Indian labourer living in Liverpool, burst into their home and stabbed Rattan to death.

Next he turned his knife on Catherine. She escaped to raise the alarm at a grocer’s shop opposite, but she died of her throat wound shortly after being admitted to hospital.

Smart was found guilty of the double-murder at Liverpool Assizes on FEBRUARY 11th, 1957, and sentenced to hang. He was later reprieved and given life imprisonment.
