Fifty people, including two women, witnessed the double execution of Patrick Griffin, 36, and Elmer Brewer, 33, at Fort Madison Prison, Iowa, on Wednesday, June 5th, 1935. It was the first hanging ever held in the state.

Griffin and Brewer had gunned down Deputy Sheriff Harry Wagner after he tried to arrest them following a series of armed robberies.
