After he came to power in 1987 President Ben Ali of Tunisia developed a reputation for commuting death sentences, but even he stopped short when the man known as “the monster of Nabeul” was sentenced to death. The “monster” was Naceur Damergi, who was found guilty of kidnapping, raping and murdering 13 children in and around the town of Nabeul during the 1980s.

Damergi’s plea for clemency was turned down because of the horrific nature of his crimes. He was hanged at dawn on Saturday, November 17th, 1990, in Nador Prison, Tunis.
