Four hundred relatives of his eight murdered victims were invited to watch the hanging of Medson Silombela at Zomba Prison, in Malawi. Silombela was a lieutenant of an opposition party which had tried to overthrow Dr. Banda’s government in a coup in 1965. He fled to the hills and it took six months to track him down.

The government brought in a hangman from Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe) because it had no executioner of its own. Silombela was hanged on February 1st, 1966.
