The girl’s voice came from wasteland in the darkness – “Wait a minute and I’ll kiss you,” it said. The voice was heard by Alice Kears, whose home bordered the wasteland, and it was later followed by a scream.

When daylight came on Sunday, August 25th, 1929, the naked body of Mary Learoyd, a 36-year-old clerk, was found on the scrub at Sedbergh Park, Ilkley. Her clothes were scattered around her body and she had been beaten to death. Witnesses said they saw her earlier that evening with a man – there were also sinister tales about her having a liaison with a married clergyman.

But despite the police bringing up bloodhounds, there were no clues that led to her killer.
