“Hey, Jim Crow, let’s have your money!” a group of white yobs yelled at West Indian Kilso Cochrane, a carpenter who, having injured his thumb, was on his way to hospital. The yobs surrounded Cochrane in Golbourne Road, Notting Hill, and stabbed him to death.

The incident happened at 1 a.m. on Sunday, May 17th, 1959, the year after the infamous Notting Hill race riots. One witness described the youths as in their mid-teens, smartly dressed, and some of them the worse for drink. The police faced a wall of silence after that, with people actually being threatened if they helped the police.
