London’s Soho was a dangerous place to be on the game in the Thirties. Pimps and customers could be killers – a fact that always made it difficult for the police to investigate a prostitute murder.

So it is that the killer of Josephine Martin, 41, known around the back streets as French Fifi, who was strangled with a silk stocking at her room in Archer Street on Monday, November 4th, 1935, has never been found. Her murder is sometimes linked with those of two other Soho prostitutes, Jeanette Cotton, who was killed in April, 1936, and Constance Hind, killed the following month.
