Thomas Craig was a 24-year-old Durham miner with a grudge. He was serving a prison sentence for rape when his sweetheart married another man, and on his release he set out to find her.

He had already written her threatening letters while he was in gaol, and his threats came true on MARCH 27th, 1910, when he found her with her husband and shot them both from behind, killing the husband and leaving the girl with two bullet wounds.

Arrested, tried and convicted of murder, Craig was duly hanged.
