Twenty years to the day after Ernest Castlelein’s death, on Sunday, July 25th, 1965, Surrey van driver James Maidment, 36, was found stabbed to death in his second-floor room in a lodging-house in Brighton. This too appeared to be a complete mystery, a murder without motive.

The inquest was told that 40 officers had interviewed 4,000 people, taken 600 statements and visited 15,000 homes and places of work, all to no avail.
