While her husband was serving abroad in the RAF middle-aged blonde Audrey Stewart supplemented her married womans service allowance by going on the game in Londons Piccadilly area. She had a 30-shillings-a-week room in a big boarding-house off Buckingham Palace Road, which came as near to being a brothel as was possible without breaking the law.
On a Saturday night in 1945 she picked up a client and took him back to the boarding-house. Next morning her landlady, who always took her breakfast in bed a service included in the rent found her naked on the bed, unconscious from severe head injuries.
Mrs. Stewart lived another seven days, never recovering consciousness, before her death on Sunday, February 24th. An American soldier and another soldier stationed in Essex were among suspects, but both were eliminated from the investigation.
