Unemployed labourer William Jordan, 23, was known to his mates as a pretty quiet sort of chap, but he blew a valve when on Sunday, MARCH 1st, 1931, his fiancee Annie Williams, also 23, told him she was breaking off their three-year engagement.

Jordan picked up a hammer and brought it down on Annie’s head. Then he stabbed her to death with scissors or a knife. For her murder he was sentenced to be hanged, but this was later commuted to life imprisonment.
