Abortion became freely accessible in the UK after 1967, but before that year there were many murders where the victims were unwanted new-born children disposed of by their distressed mothers.

One such happened on Thursday, April 9th, 1964, when the partly decomposed body of a new-born male child was found in a field off Outwood Lane in Chipstead, Surrey. The body was in a bloodied towel, inside a plastic bag. Verdict at the Epsom inquest: murder by a person or persons unknown.
