For several weeks George Harrison, 50, had been arguing with his lover Gwendoline Jones, 41, over the payment of bills and Harrisons suspicion that she was seeing other men. Another row erupted at their Swindon home on FEBRUARY 16th, 1957, and Harrison stabbed Mrs. Jones to death.
On March 21st, 1957, the Homicide Act abolished capital punishment for most types of murder, and Harrison was the first man to be convicted of murder and sentenced to life imprisonment. He was released nine years later in 1966.
