Walking on Liverpool’s Canada Dock on September 9th, 1919, Samuel Emmett, a dock employee, was suddenly confronted by Harry Theman, 32, chief engineer of an American ship.

Theman told Emmett: “You’re a crook and a burglar.” Although these allegations were totally untrue, Theman then pulled out a revolver and shot Emmett dead.

When he was arrested Theman told police: “I had a dream last night in which I saw my dead mother, grandmother and God. They told me that if I went into the street and saw a burglar I had to shoot him, then I would go to heaven.”

Instead, he went to Broadmoor, sentenced at Liverpool Assizes on NOVEMBER 1st.
