Everything about 31-year-old Philip Murray said “don’t mess with me.” A big bruiser of a man with his right eye missing, he worked on-and-off as a news vendor in Edinburgh, sharing a second-floor flat in Jamaica Street. It was there in an explosion of violence in the late evening of Saturday, June 23rd, 1923, that 30-year-old railway worker William Cree crashed out through the window to his death. It was a brutal crime, one that the powers-that-be at the time felt warranted no mercy being shown. Indeed, none was shown, thereby guaranteeing Philip Murray a place in history.
“Hey! What’s cooking?” the killer said to the police dispatcher, adding that he had killed his girlfriend and was now boiling parts of her body. Calmly giving his mother’s address, he said he was waiting for police officers to arrive. “Don’t be too long or I’ll eat all of her,” he laughed down the telephone before hanging up. Sadly, his last words weren’t too far from the truth.
The two men on the run were fugitives with a difference. Having already escaped from one prison they broke into another. In the process they became wanted for murder in one of the biggest manhunts in Australia’s history. A brutal case with a sadistic sting in the tail.
