Harry Allen: Britain's Last Hangman
£6.99

As recently as the 1960s, convicted murderers in Britain were hanged by the neck until dead. Now, for the first time, you can read the full story of Britainıs last hangman Harry Allen:

Yorkshire-born Allen was the last hangman to officiate in Britain.
He was assistant executioner from 1941 until 1955, and chief executioner from 1957.
He held the job until the suspension of capital punishment in 1965.
He was in charge of 29 executions and assisted at 53 others, including the
controversial hanging of Derek Bentley in 1953.
As chief executioner he hanged James Hanratty, Ronald Marwood and Guenther Podola, who shot dead a
policeman in a London street.

Author Stewart McLaughlin works for the prison service and has had rare access to prison files to produce this, the first biography of Harry Allen.
As well as Allenıs fascinating life, the book focuses on the stories and the people behind the hangings the murderers, the victims and the detectives.
