True Detective

Had the shopping list been made by just about anyone else it might have seemed completely innocuous. It included bin liners from B&Q, a balaclava and bleach from Tesco and a meat cleaver, a knife and trolley bags from Argos. Household goods that make it onto many a shopping list – but these particular items topped a killer’s shopping list and they were bought for a deadly purpose...

William Dillon had no chance really. He was convicted on the testimony of a half-blind eye-witness, a sniffer dog with no sense of smell, a girlfriend who slept with the lead investigator on the case and a jailhouse snitch looking to make a deal with the authorities. It all added up to an obscene catalogue of injustice and corruption that was to cost Dillon more than half his life behind bars – a sentence that began in 1982 when he stepped out of a police van and into Florida’s oldest state jail.

A Sussex villa, a Wiltshire footpath and a Northumberland inn all shared a tragic distinction in the early years of the 20th century. Why? Police officers lost their lives at each location.
