“I represent an electrical wiring company,” the caller said. “I wonder if you have thought about having an expert examine the wiring in your house?”
It was a come-on line, and not many in the Radford area of Coventry fell for it. Some of the women who answered the doorbell said the man made sexual advances to them before running off.
Mrs. Penelope Mogano, 43, may have been more trusting. In the afternoon of Monday, January 18th, 1954, the caller, described as in his 20s and having “a southern accent,” somehow gained access to her house in Holland Road, smashed her head in, slashed her face and ripped open her clothes. Her body was found by her husband slumped in a chair.
Scotland Yard interviewed 25,000 people, all of whom had alibis for that afternoon.
