Simon Wastall

FORMER ACCOUNTANT Simon Wastall, 47, a convicted murderer who disappeared after being released on licence in 2005, has been arrested in Italy outside his mother’s house in the village of Pino Torinese near Turin. In a joint operation by British and Italian Police aided by Interpol, Wastall was tracked to the house that his mother shares with his sister.
Wastall was jailed for life at Nottingham Crown Court in 1994, a year after the murder of his former girl friend Catherine Carey, whom he met through a dating agency. Their relationship ended in acrimony and afterwards she refused to let him see their baby daughter. Wastall hired a private detective to trace his former lover who, he claimed, had stolen his child.
The court heard how Wastall stalked Miss Carey and drew up elaborate plans to kill her at her home at Syston near Leicester. On the night of Miss Carey’s death, he dressed himself in black then crept into her bedroom as she slept and stabbed her to death. He fled, leaving his eight-month-old daughter asleep in the next room to her dead mother.
Police quickly identified him as the killer after finding his wallet, containing a note showing his intentions, at the murder scene. Sentencing Wastall to life, trial judge Mr. Justice Blofeld told him his actions had deprived his own daughter of both her parents. Crime news stories from True Crime Library.
