True Crime News: 4/12/2007 Daniele Emmanuello
DANIELE EMMANUELLO, a 43-year-old Mafia Don, died while attempting to avoid arrest when 30 armed police officers burst into his isolated farmhouse hideout in Sicily. Considered as one of Italy’s 30 most dangerous fugitives, Emmanuello was thought to be head of the mob in Gela, Sicily, and had been on the run since 1996. He was wanted for Mafia association, drugs trafficking and murder.
Police believe he was a part of the kidnap and murder of supergrass’s son Giuseppe Di Matteo, 11, who was held for more than a year, then throttled and dissolved in acid.
Emmanuello escaped the police raid by jumping unarmed in his pyjamas from a first-floor window. His body was recovered from the bottom of a ravine. It is not clear whether he was shot before falling.
Mayor Giuseppe Crocetta said: “Emmanuello’s stranglehold on the area destroyed the economy and development.” Crime news stories from True Crime Library.
